The NHL (National Hockey League) was formed on November 26, 1917. Members of the NHL were the Montreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs and a Toronto franchise. Toronto’s team played their first game on December 19, 1917 against the Montreal Wanderers. That game was the start of a rich hockey tradition in Toronto, called Leafs Nation. Toronto went on that year and managed to win the Stanley Cup.
Toronto’s team left the league for a season due to financial problems in the 1918-1919 season. The team came back to the 1919-1920 season renamed as the Toronto St. Pats.
In February 1927 Conn Smythe, who had previously built the New York Rangers franchise bought the Toronto St. Pats and prevented the franchise from moving to Philadelphia. Conn Smythe changed the jerseys from green and white to white and blue and renamed the team to the Maple Leafs that we know them as today.
After Conn Smythe made the changes to the Maple Leafs name and jerseys, he thought the leafs should play in a “world class arena”. They built the Maple Leafs Gardens for the team to play in, holding up to 13, 233 people. Tickets for games would sell for 95 cents to $2.75. The Maple Leaf Gardens became the first arena to host a 4 sided game clock.
The franchise has gone through a full 85 seasons since Conn Smythe bought the Toronto Maple Leafs.
